Hair thinning doesn't happen without a reason: a doctor explains what your body may be trying to tell you and how to help

Hello.

My name is Dr. Deimantė Rožėnaitė, and for the past 9 years I have been working with women struggling with hair loss.

During that time, I have spoken with thousands of women of different ages who found themselves in very different situations. But one feeling has always remained the same.

They felt alone, misunderstood and completely exhausted from trying everything to stop their hair from falling out — yet nothing seemed to work.

You probably know that feeling too.

“When a woman notices more and more hair left in her brush, the problem has usually started long before it becomes visible in the mirror.”

Hair loss, thinning, loss of shine or brittle hair are problems many women face. Although we often first look for a miracle shampoo or hair mask, specialists remind us: beautiful hair starts not in the bathroom, but inside the body.

The most common problem – hair loss, with causes that run deeper

Women most often seek help because of hair loss and thinning. Before seeing a specialist, they have often already tried various cosmetic products, waited for the situation to improve on its own, and only after seeing no results do they start looking for answers with a family doctor.

“Hair loss often remains unresolved because its causes lie deeper than the hair itself. Most commonly, it is related to internal changes in the body – sometimes age, deficiencies of certain nutrients, inadequate nutrition, stress, hormonal changes or even an undiagnosed condition.”

The condition of the hair often becomes one of the first signs that something in the body is not quite right.

Why does hair start thinning after 30?

Many women notice that the condition of their hair begins to change between the ages of 30 and 40. And this is no coincidence.

“An intense pace of life, dieting, lack of quality rest, constant stress and irregular, unbalanced nutrition begin to show in the hair over time. In addition, natural hormonal changes also begin after the age of thirty, which can affect the hair growth cycle.”

Hair is like a mirror of the body. When important nutrients are lacking, the body directs them first to vital functions, while hair is left behind.

For example, iron is needed for oxygen transport, B vitamins for energy production and nervous system function, and zinc is important for the immune system. When these nutrients are in short supply, hair growth can slow down, it can weaken, start breaking or thinning.

Which deficiencies are most commonly reflected in the hair?

When tests are carried out, the most commonly identified deficiencies are iron, vitamin D, zinc and B vitamins.

A lack of these nutrients may show up not only as hair loss. Hair can become drier, lose its shine and break more easily. Changes may also appear in the skin and nails – the skin can look duller and more sensitive, and nails may start to peel or split.

“It is important to understand that laboratory reference ranges often indicate the levels needed to maintain basic bodily functions. However, this does not necessarily mean they are optimal for healthy hair, skin or nails. That is why test results should always be discussed with a doctor.”

Why isn’t shampoo alone enough?

Beauty products can give hair more shine or smoothness, but they do not affect the hair formation process itself.

“When a woman starts taking care of her body from within, long-term results can follow. A balanced diet, sufficient vitamins and minerals, quality sleep and hormonal balance allow hair to grow stronger from the roots.”

Women often look for convenient ways to supplement their diet with the nutrients they need. One of the reasons vitamin gummies are becoming increasingly popular is their simple and convenient form: they are tasty, easy to take and, because they do not look like a “pill,” a daily habit is easier to build.

“Ultimately, however, what matters most is not the form, but the ingredients and consistency.”

When can you expect the first results?

Be patient. Hair growth is a slow process, so you should not expect dramatic changes within just a few weeks.

“The first changes are usually noticeable after 2–3 months of consistently getting the necessary micronutrients. Hair loss often slows down first, and later new baby hairs appear.”

One of the most common signs that the body is recovering is the appearance of new, short hairs around the hairline or at the crown. Over time, hair may become thicker, stronger, less prone to breakage and easier to grow longer.

Women often notice additional benefits as well – improved well-being, more energy, stronger nails and clearer-looking skin.

What do doctors recommend?

If you look in the mirror and feel that your hair is no longer what it used to be, the first piece of advice is: don’t ignore the problem.

“It’s not just an aesthetic issue. Often, it’s a sign that the body may be lacking something. The first step should be finding the cause – blood tests, an assessment of your diet, rest and lifestyle. Then comes consistent self-care.”

Hair health is built through everyday choices. A balanced diet, sufficient protein, essential vitamins and minerals, and consistent care can help support stronger, thicker and healthier-looking hair.

WHAT SCIENCE REALLY SAYS ABOUT HAIR LOSS AND NUTRITION

In recent years, researchers have shifted their attention away from shampoos and towards what we consume. Here are the key findings.

Study · Frontiers in Nutrition, 2024 (meta-analysis)

VITAMIN D — HAS THE STRONGEST ASSOCIATION WITH HAIR LOSS…

A systematic review covering multiple studies found that more than 50% of women experiencing hair loss (telogen effluvium and FPHL) had vitamin D deficiency — significantly more than in the control group without hair loss.

Vitamin D receptors are found directly in hair follicles. When vitamin D is lacking, the follicle cycle can become disrupted.

Study · 2851 women with hair loss, 2025

IRON — THE MOST COMMON DEFICIENCY IN WOMEN

A retrospective study involving 2851 women with telogen effluvium found that 46.5% had ferritin deficiency. The highest prevalence was observed among women aged 18–45 — exactly the group that most commonly seeks help.

Iron is a cofactor for enzymes involved in DNA synthesis. Hair follicles are among the most rapidly dividing structures in the body and are therefore particularly sensitive to iron deficiency.

Study · Kurt et al., 2024 (125 patients with hair loss)

ZINC — THERE IS AN ASSOCIATION, BUT IT IS SUBTLE

Women with telogen effluvium had the highest indicators of zinc deficiency among all types of hair loss — zinc deficiency was found in almost a third of patients, compared with 1.3% in the control group.

Study · Serum Biotin Levels in Women, PMC 2016

BIOTIN — IMPORTANT SPECIFICALLY WHEN THERE IS A DEFICIENCY

The study found that 38% of women complaining of hair loss had biotin deficiency. Among those who were not deficient, biotin supplementation may not provide an additional benefit — which is why having the right dose matters, rather than simply taking the maximum amount.

Biotin, zinc and vitamin D are approved under EU Regulation No. 432/2012 as substances that contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. This is an officially approved health claim.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT HAIR. AND YOU KNOW IT.

It’s easy to talk about hair loss as if it were purely cosmetic. But for a woman who looks at the bristles of her brush every morning, it rarely feels like “just cosmetics”.

“My hair was one of the things that made me feel beautiful and confident. When it started thinning, I began changing my hairstyle just to hide it.”

Thinning hair can change even very ordinary habits: how you style it, how you feel about being photographed, or how much attention you pay to your hair after washing it.

“I want to feel like myself again. Not ‘perfect’. Just myself.”

If any of that sounds familiar, the most important first step is not to panic. It is to start looking at the problem systematically – and to choose the steps you can realistically keep up.

INTRODUCING FRANK FRUITIES SKIN, HAIR & NAILS

One thing needs to be said very clearly: not every case of hair loss means a vitamin deficiency. And no food supplement replaces looking for the cause. But there is also a very everyday problem.

Even knowing that nutrition matters, we don’t always eat well. One week more, the next — less proper food. Skipped breakfasts. Lunch between meetings. Diets. Stress. Rushing.

And when taking supplements feels unpleasant, that routine is easy to forget.

So the question is no longer “which miracle vitamin will regrow my hair?”

IT BECOMES: HOW DO YOU MAKE A DAILY NUTRITION ROUTINE YOU CAN ACTUALLY KEEP?

Frank Fruities Skin, Hair & Nails gummies

Frank Fruities was created around one simple truth: the most effective supplement is the one you actually take every day.

These are not tablets or powders. They taste like a fruity treat and are made from concentrated apple, peach, mango and passion fruit juices — with no added sugar, no gelatine and no preservatives. In 2024, we were certified for quality and safety by the Swiss Nutrition and Health Foundation.

And because they are enjoyable to take, you are less likely to forget them, skip them or stop using them. Consistency is what really makes the difference.

Here’s what each gummy contains:

  • Vitamin D3 — Its association with hair loss has been supported in scientific studies.
  • Iron — Without the metallic taste often associated with iron supplements.
  • Biotin — Contributes to the maintenance of normal hair (EU Reg. 432/2012).
  • Zinc — Contributes to the maintenance of normal hair (EU Reg. 432/2012).
  • Niacin B3 — Contributes to the maintenance of normal skin.
  • Vitamin A — Contributes to the maintenance of normal skin.
  • Vitamin E — Contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
  • B vitamins (B1, B6, B12) — Contribute to normal energy metabolism and nervous system function.
  • Iodine — Contributes to the maintenance of normal skin.

This is not a random combination of vitamins. These are nutrients whose relationship with hair and skin health is among the most widely documented in scientific research and which women are commonly deficient in.

“I tried everything. Tablets I hated taking. Powders I kept forgetting. Frank Fruities taste like sweets, and because I actually look forward to taking them, I haven’t missed a single day in four months. I can see and feel the difference.”
